NEW MEXICO OPEN - STATE'S BIGGEST AND RICHEST BOWLING TOURNEY
Worth $29,000 this
year Rio Rancho, New Mexico!
The 6th New Mexico Open, presented by the New Mexico Sports
Authority, to be held at Tenpins & More in Rio Rancho August 15-16, will be the
state's biggest and richest bowling tournament with cash prizes and awards totaling
more than $29,000.
"Our sponsors have continued to support us well, in spite
of the economy, and we're gearing up for 120 bowlers again, same as last year",
said tournament director, Steve Mackie. "We paid just over $30,000 in 2008
and given any late sponsor agreements may yet exceed that pay-out this year",
said Mackie.
The field will include defending champion, Mark French of Ventura, CA,
a former Youth Team USA member, who rode a 26-year-old urethane ball to victory over
former Team USA member, Mark Van Meter of Albuquerque for $6,000 first prize, the
same guaranteed first prize as offered this year.
Kurtis Lee, of Capitan, NM, now
serving from a US Naval Base in Sasebo, Japan, will be flying here for the tournament.
Lee finished fifth in the 2005 event and is a previous scratch series winner at Tenpins & More.
Others already signed include Anthony Delahanty of Phoenix, AZ, Tom Patton of Olathe,
KS, Tyler Jensen of Fort Worth, TX and two-time New Mexico Open winner, John Young
of Edgewood, NM who recently bowled his 25th career 300 game in summer league at
Tenpins & More.
The tournament features a traditional format consisting of two
rounds of qualifying, a matchplay round over 12 games and a five-person step-ladder
final. The eventual winner could bowl as many as 29 games in two days.
The main event
is preceded by a Storm bowling ball event, sweepers, a practice session and Pro-Am
squads the two days prior and a new Consolation tournament for non-cashers on the
final day. It will also feature brackets at each squad that have paid out more than
$5,000 each of the last two years.
